Question
Hi
I have a coin that has a big five in the middle on one side under the five is two branches in the middle of the branches is a D. This coin is also from 1944. I was wandering what this coin is and how much it is worth.

Thanks

Answer
Hi John,
This is a 5 pfennig from Nazi Germany. The coins are made of zinc and usually have white spots where the metal has begun to corrode. The 1944-D (Munich mint) is one of the more common dates/mints with over 26 million of them made. In great shape without white corrosion spots, value is around $10 practically speaking. With significant wear or white spots they are worth just a couple of dollars.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
