Question
Coin Callage
Coin Callage
I found this coin in my old baby book today. My father said it was part of a 3 coin set but anyways. It has been in the book for 35 years but it looks like it has chipping on his face. Plus the "L" in Liberty has some groves in it. Other letters have the same. The mint mark looks like a bubble and on the reverse the last "S" in states looks tilted. Can you enlighten me on this coin please? I put some markers on the photo just to show my concerns. Thanks

Answer
Kirk,

While there were 3-coin sets for the bicentennial coins, they all were "S" mintmarked coins -- yours is a "D" mintmark.

The chipping on the face and the grooves in the lettering and the obverse scratch are all due to contact with other coins -- either within a bank bag or from having been in circulation at some time.

The shape of the S in STATES is normal for this coin.

These coins were minted for 2 years -- 1975 and 1975 -- and there were over 100 million of them minted.  The fact that the lettering on the reverse is the wider variety (Type 1) indicates your coin was actually minted in 1975.

Considered common, your coin has a collector value of about $1.10

I hope this helps,

Dan
