Question
Hi  Jim,

I have a large silver certificate , dated 1899.  It has a black eagle on the front and pictues of Abe Lincoln and US Grant. It is in fair condition.  How much do you feel it is worth?

                 Thank You,
                      Rita

Answer
Rita, condition is much of the value of old currency.  So I can't really tell you as I am not sure what you mean by "fair condition."  The old 1898 and 1899 certificates are fairly sought after and do have some good value.  Try going to www.ebay.com and do a search for 1899 dollar silver certificate or similar search and you should see some like yours come up for sale.  You can see what price is asked and look at the condition, but also see what prices are bid.  Showing your piece to a currency expert would be a good idea.  Please take care of it -- don't fold it, or do anything else to make it less desirable!
