Coin and Paper Money Collecting/silver Italian coin

Question
Hi, I was given a silver Italian coin years ago and I'm curious to know what it's worth. I would really appreciate it if you could give me an idea. It's a 1918 silver coin. On one side it has a woman's face(to the side/up to her shoulders) with the words Regnum Italicum. On the other side it has an eagle with wings outspread and a crown above his head with the words AD.NEGOT.ERYTHR.COMMOD.ARC.SIGN. Can you tell me the coin's denomination? Can you give me an idea of it's worth?  THANK-YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.

Answer

Hi Bea,
This is a "tallero" or 5 lire from the Eritrea under Italian rule. They are fairly scarce coins, but are pretty easy to find in circulated condition. A typical coin with not much wear is in the $100 to $150 range. If you would like to attach a clear picture of one side to a follow-up question, I can give you a more specific grade and value for your coin. Fakes are also pretty common and I can determine authenticity from a good picture.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
