Question
i would like to find out how to tell the difference between a reproduction and a orginal. i would also like to find out how much is an orginal worth

Answer
Hi Betty,
Sorry for the delay in getting to your question.
Typically weighing the coin is a quick way to get an idea. A mint condition coin should weigh 27.1 grams. However, if your coin has wear, it is expected to be slightly lower. The normal weight really depends on how much wear is on the coin.
If everything on the coin is easily readable, then it should not weigh below 26 grams. The vast majority counterfeits will be well below 27 grams, even if they do not appear to have wear. Occasionally counterfeits will be heavier than normal, it all depends on the alloys they are made of.

I can also determine authenticity from clear, close-up pictures of the coin. You can e-mail me pictures directly at BetweenEarthnSky@yahoo.com or attach them to a follow-up question on this site.

As far as value - a mid grade coin with some, but not heavy wear is worth $300 to $400. Mint condition coins go into the thousands of dollars, while a heavily worn coin will be below well $100. Again, clear pictures would be necessary before I can give a specific grade and value for the coin, rather than a range of values.

Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
