Question
Russian Coin 1901
Russian Coin 1901
Hi!

I recently found a coin given to me by my relatives in Latvia, I didn't have much interest in it until now as I'm short on money.

It is Nicholas II 10 rouble gold coin with the mint master (AP) on the side.  I spoken to a gold specialist with an interest in coins as said that I could have a coin given as a medal as it is smooth around the edge with Russian letters pressed in. (please see attached images)

I wanted to know if you could tell me if this is a coin or medal, possible value (I understand grade and proof a little) and how best to go about selling it (I live in UK if it changes things).

Thankyou for any help you can give me, and if the pictures aren't clear enough i can try and get better ones!

Kind Regards
Nicola
Thankyou

Answer
Hi Nicola,
The edge looks normal for these coins, though the surface looks like it has been cleaned. This coin is not a proof, but appears to be uncirculated details with cleaning by rubbing with a cloth.
In this condition it would sell for only a little above gold bullion value. Without cleaning it would be worth closer to $500 (USD), in it's current state I would expect something between $400 and $450 (USD). This is one of the common dates, with over 2 million coins made.

There are also fakes of even the common dates. Your coin should be 8.6 grams since it does not show wear.

Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
