Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1997 Impressions of Liberty American Eagle set

Question
I read an answer you gave to an inquiry about this set wherein you stated that it was not a US Mint issue.
According to silvereagleguide.com, "the US Mint also offered the Impressions of Liberty Set, which contained one ounce proof Gold, Silver, and Platinum Eagles. The three coin set was released to coincide with the launch of the new American Platinum Eagle. The product was limited to 5,000 sets priced at $1,499.00. The set sold out at the US Mint."  Is there a collector value you can give for the set in 2011? (It's quite impressive in terms of packaging.)

Answer
Hi Dan,

I was unable to find that reference on silvereagleguide.com, but I did find a couple sets listed on eBay :

One that sold for just under $3900 :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150634929037

And another one listed for $4250 that did not sell :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320733334122

I was wrong -- it is a U.S. Mint issued product, but it's not listed anywhere in the price guides (as a set).

Individually, the values add up to about $3500, so the $3900 selling price gives it about a $400 bonus for being in the set.  However, there was only one bidder, so the interest value in this set is low.  So if you go to sell it to a dealer, you will probably only get the metal value for the set.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
