Question
i have a coin which reads Victoria Del Gratia Britt Regina.f:d and has the head of queen Victoria.the otherside  Honi.soit.qui Mal.Y.Pense 1888 and has 4 squares ,within the squares 2 have lions and then 1 has a harp and the 4th has some thing i cant quite identify would like to know if it has a value and where it was made etc.many thanks.

Answer

Hi Gerda,
This would be a British shilling, made of .925 sterling silver. The coins themselves are common in circulated condition and worth just a few dollars when they are well worn. One with very little wear is worth in the $20-$25 range and one that is in mint condition with luster and no signs of wear is $75-$100+.
If you would like to attach a clear picture of the side with Victoria I can give you an exact grade and value rather than just a relative range.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
