Question
I have a coin that I think might be of value. It is inscribed with "GEORGIUS IIII D:G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:" on the front and has a picture of St George slaying a dragon on the reverse side. On the edge the words "ANNO REGNI TERTIO. DECUS ET TUTAMEN." appears. It is large and seems to made of silver. The condition is good with some wear. The date is 1822. Can you provide approximate value?

Thank You.

Answer
Hi Ciaran,
This is a British crown, their version of a silver dollar. It's made of .925 sterling silver.
Condition is very important for value. A heavily worn coin is worth silver melt value of around $30. A medium grade example, with some wear but everything visible and readable is worth $40 to $50. The prices jump dramatically for coins that have little wear and you can see clear separation in the hair of the king.
I can give you more exact info on the coin if you can attach a clear picture of it to a follow-up question.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
