Coin and Paper Money Collecting/mis struck US quarter

Question
I have a 1940 US quarter and any information you could provide as  to history and value would be very helpful. The front side has Washingtons picture , the word quarter and the date 1940. it is very blurry and hard to see even though it is is in very good condition. the sides are uneven and give the apperance of hahingn slid during the strike. the back has nothing on it but is deeply indented and the indentations have the same shao as the oicture on the front.

Answer
James,

Not sure what you have, but it does not match the description of a quarter from the U.S. Mint. It should not have the word quarter on the same side as the portrait of Washington.  It should have LIBERTY at the top, IN GOD WE TRUST on the left, and the date (1940) at the bottom, like this one :

My best guess is that it's somebody's fantasy coin -- not made by the U.S. Mint, and would not be considered desirable by most collectors.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
