What is the value of a silver 1840 Republica Mexicana coin with the following markings:

8 R.Z.1840.O.M.10D.20G   dots are between the letters

One side of the coin has the eagle on a cactus - other side is the libertad hat   It is silver dollar size.  Worn.

Answer
Hi Carolyn,
This Mexican 8 reales coin is from the Zacatecas mint. It's one of the more common dates mints for this series. In decent shape, with everything clearly readable it's worth $35 to $45. Heavily worn coins are basically worth silver bullion value, which is around $30 for the 8 reales coins.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
