QUESTION: I acquired a german state coin (that is all I have found out so far).  It says 1695 for a date.  Also says 24 marien Grosch, v. fein. silb on the back.  Altissimi and some other words on back.  The front has a guy standing with some leaves around his waist.  Looks like he's holding something, and maybe a tree or something beside him.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Exactly what is this coin, and what is the approximate value?

ANSWER: Hi Kurtis,
Can you possibly attach an image of the other side? There are a few German states that had coins with this design and denomination and also had the giant "wild man" holding a tree on the opposite side. I would need to see the design and mint marks on the other side to identify the exact state and therefore value.
This would be from Brunswick, Wolfenbuttel, or a combination of either with other states. At this time some states were a combination of several smaller states and their names are basically all the smaller states in one (for example: Brunswick-Luneberg-Hannover-Calenberg is the name of a large state that was created by combining four smaller ones).
Thanks for the question! =)

QUESTION: Here is the front of the coin.

Answer
Hi again Kurtis,
Sorry for the delay in answering your question.
This 24 mariengroschen is from the state of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. They are fairly scarce coins, and without the hole at top would have been worth in the $75 to $100 range. With the hole, it would be expected at $20 to $30 at auction.
Thanks again for the questions! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
