Question
i have 2 australian pennies: 1 dated 1912 with georgivs v d g britt omn rex fd ind imp on the front, and commonwealth of australia on the back with one penny in a circle in the middle of the coin. the other is dated 1918, on the front it says: georgivs dei gra britt omn rex fid def ind imp and on the back: one penny with a picture of a figure holding a trident. they appear to be bronze or perhaps copper. any info about them would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Susan,
The first (1912) penny is indeed Australian. They are common coins overall, but rare in excellent condition. A coin without any signs of wear is worth several hundred dollars, while one with normal wear is worth just a couple of dollars.
The 1918 coin is a British penny. This one is common even in excellent condition - UNLESS you have one of the better varieties. If you look to the left of the date, there may be a small letter H or KN. These are mint marks and a 1918 coin with either of these will be worth significantly more than a 1918 without any such letters. The KN mint mark is the most rare for this year.
Both coins are made of bronze.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
