Question
Hello; I have a coin that I received as a gift showing Pope John Paul II on one side,(which reads Joannes Paulvs II Pont.Max) the other is a picture of the Pieta (which reads Roma-Citta Del Vaticano, with Pieta below the picture)
Is this coin worth anything for collectors?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Annette,
This is one of a series of souvenir medals that were made for sale to tourists in the 1960's and 1970's. They are made of an alloy of various base metals and have a thin layer of silver gilding over the surface.
Unfortunately value on these is not particularly high. They are pretty common in the market and auction values are generally $5 to $10.
Of course, in a retail setting in a coin or religious items shop they would be asking significantly more.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
