Question
Liberian Coins
Liberian Coins
Hello,

I have two Liberian US Presidents in Gold coins.  $50 and $25 face value.  The Certificate of Authenticity states that the material is .585 gold, 3.11 and 1.56 grams respectively.  Can you tell me what the value of these two coins are?

My dad was the world's worst at collecting junk.

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Kae,

Now that gold is so high, these will actually have some value.

Assuming a gold spot price of $1,750 ....

3.11 / 31.1 (grams per ounce) X .585 X 1750 = $102.38 melt value

1.56 / 31.1 X .585 X 1750 = $51.35 melt value

For this type of item, most bullion dealers will give you about 90% of the melt value.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
