Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Proofs vs Bullion

Question
QUESTION: Hi Dan -

When purchasing american eagle silver/gold, is there any value down the road to buying proofs directly from the gov't or is bullion (uncirculated AEs) just about the same. I'm asking from a perspective of investing - not collecting.

AND - who is a reputable dealer to buy from when purchasing bullion?

Thanks very much in advance.

ANSWER: Bill,

Premiums for proof eagles fluctuate like the wind -- if you feel lucky, go for it.

UNC eagles will be much more closely tied to spot prices -- both now and in the future -- you won't gain or lose any significant amount on the premiums that you may with proofs.

There are many reputable dealers -- what part of the country are you in?

Dan

QUESTION: I'm in Atlanta, Ga, Dan.  Thanks for the answer.

How much above current spot price should I pay for UNC, eagles?

Answer
Bill,

I have done business with these guys (especially Grant) and find them to be very reputable :

Grant Campbell

Expect to pay $4 over spot for silver eagles, and $10 to $50 over spot for gold eagles (depending on size and quantity).
