Question
Spanish Amer. War Medallion
Spanish Amer. War Meda
Dmitry thank you for getting back with me.  Your email had gone to spam and was deleted before I got a chance to look at it but my husband did read it and let me know that you would like to see a picture.  I could only attach one photo.  The other side says RECUERDO DE PUERTO RICO 1898 around the edge and has what looks to be a deer holding a flag in the middle.
Thank You,
Stephanie

Answer
Hi Stephanie,
One thing I will not be able to tell you is an accurate value.
This is a privately made or souvenir type of item, it's not an official one that I can even reference in any material in print or online.
The message states something to the tune of "Remember Puerto Rico". I'm assuming the deer on the other side is holding the Puerto Rican flag. The reverse crossed flags are US and the red and white is a flag of the Spanish military.
It's tough to say when this item was made, but I feel it was during the Spanish American war rather than after. This is sort of a two-fold keepsake, one that both US and Spanish individuals would be interested in.
Being that it fairly crude compared to official items of the period, the potential value would be tens of dollars rather than hundreds. This is still far better than what is generally true for unofficial souvenir items.
Thanks for the question! =)

CommentThank you very much. My husband's grandfather gave it to him when he was about 14 and he will be 36 next month. That was the only info. I had about it. Thanks for your help. I have researched and researched also and never found anything. Thank you again.

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
