Question
I have a set of three Kenyan Gold Coins bearing an inscription of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. They are in the denomitation of 100, 250 and 500 Shillings. They were issued in 1966 to commemorate the  75th Birthday of the President. I would appreciate if you could kindly let me know its current value.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Colin,
This set contains 1.9 ounces of pure gold. The melt value of the gold is over $3,100 at today's gold prices.
The collectible value of this set is around 25% above the melt value. There are two versions, a proof set with mirror-like fields and frosted raised features and a normal version that has a matte look without sharp contrast between the fields and raised features. The proof set will be worth close to $4,000 and the normal version a few hundred less than that, but no less than $3,500.
Please note that since the value is mostly that of gold bullion, the price will fluctuate along with gold markets. This is different than coins that have a large collectible premium and their prices tend to be more independent of gold values.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
