Question
QUESTION: My father collected coins and passed them on to me.  For some reason he has 20 rolls of 1971 Lincoln pennys uncirculated.  I'm reading about some sort of double struck date or similar double strike. What do I look for and if there are one of those in these rolls, in UC condition,  how much would one be worth ?

Thank you
Stan the Travel Man

ANSWER: Stan,

The valuable double die from that period is on 1972 pennies, not 1971.

Sorry,

Dan

QUESTION: Thank you Dan, however, if I'm mistaken on the year of the rolls
how much would a 1972 double die be worth and what part of the coin
was double struck, what would I look for ?  Thank you again , Dan

Answer
Stan,

The 1972 Double Die was caused by the misalignment of dies, causing doubling to appear on the lettering and date. The doubling is most prominent on the date and the lettering of the words "Liberty" and "In." Approximately 75,000 double die coins were produced this year.

You can find pictures and descriptions of what to look for here :

If you find some, then depending on how nice of uncirculated condition they are in, you should be able to get $300 to $350 apiece for them.

I hope this helps,

Dan
