Question
I have two 1975 proof coin sets, or so I think i found them in an old trunk belonging to my grandfather.  when I looked them up online it said something about a1975 set being rare if it hd no mint marks o it.  One of the sets I have has mint parks but the other set does not.  How can I tell if this is a rare set or were some of the sets made without mint marks?

Answer
Ted,

It sounds like you may have an uncirculated coin set, rather than two proof sets.

A 1975 uncirculated set will contain two cellophane packets of coins -- one set with "D" mintmarks and one set with no mintmarks -- 12 coins total.

Like the one pictured here :

A 1975 proof set will contain 6 coins -- all with "S" mintmarks -- stored in a hard plastic holder.

The valuable set you're thinking of is the proof set that has the dime with no "S" mintmark -- all the other coins in the set will still have "S" mintmarks.  One of these sets is worth about $35,000

If you do end up having the rare no-S dime proof sets, let me know and I can help you sell it.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
