Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Bavarian Thaler

Question
Hello and thank you!
I'm by no means an expert so I'd like to ask you about a Bavarian/Madonna Thaler that I acquired. The legend reads:
D.G.MAX.IOS.U.B.& P.S.D.C.R.R.S.R.I.A.&EL.L.L.

I'm curious about the extra letters I see with this thaler compared to some of the others I have. This one also has reeded edges, something I'm not uesed to seeing with thalers either. I've only seen smooth rolled edges. The coin is dated 1755 with a flower/star? mark nest to the date. Could you provide any insight to that for me? Thanks again!

Answer
Hi Johnny,
Everything you describe about the coin is normal. This version with the star to the right of the date is cataloged by Krause as KM# 223.2 and Dav. as Dav.# 1952. The edges on thalers vary widely, depending on the German state it's from and the time period. Most do not have smooth edges, but either reeding or letters/characters, but sometimes also unusual designs. Value on this coins ranges from around $25 for a well worn coin up to a few hundred for one in mint condition.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
