Question
1938 Magna Mater gold coin
1938 Magna Mater gold
I recently checked to find the value of this coin. While the 1938 magna mater is very rare, this one has a different reverse side. I cannot find this type of coin anywhere or its value. I have attached a picture of the coin. Can you please let me know the history and value of this piece. Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Renate,
This is a modern facsimile coin, made for someone that wanted the look but could not afford the price of the original coin. It would be worth gold bullion value plus 10%-15% in a retail situation. Auction estimates would be only gold bullion value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
