Question
Nickel
Nickel
I have a Jefferson Nickel from 1984 with what appears to be a blemish of excess metal on the "tails" side of the coin. I'd like to know if its anything special before I inadvertently spend it! I hope the pictures provided are good enough. Thanks!

Answer
Molly,

Cool coin!!!

The picture is a little blurry, but with my imagination I believe it is a massive die break.  What happens is the die that strikes the coin will wear out over time usually resulting in small cracks and occasionally a break.  Your coin is a MASSIVE die break.  Lots of times they won't command as much of a premium as they should, however, I do suggest you take it to a local coin dealer to get their in-person opinion.

Good Luck!!!

Expertise

I can answer most questions regarding United States coinage from colonial times to present. I am aware of current market values and can usually give a close estimate as to the value of a coin. If you could send a picture it makes it easier to place a value. I am not educated in the area of world coins or any type of currency. I am an avid researcher and would love to tackle any questions you may have for me!
