Question
1988 Penny No "FG"
1988 Penny No "FG"
Dear Sir, I found this 1988 Penny with No "FG".I hope my Pic is clear enough to see.How could this Happen?I even looked in the direct sunlight and turned the penny sideway etc...not even a shadow,or scratch in that area to show, that there was something there, you know, like a light Print etc!
Is this a collectable? Value?
Look foward to your advise, thoughts on this find.God Bless!

Beck,
Kissimmee FL
PS:If you like,I have the front pic ready.

Answer
Hi Beck,

That's a nice specimen of an over-polished die.  Most likely the dies clashed, and they tried to remove the clash by polishing the die (to excess).

Other examples of this have been found -- value maybe couple dollars if you can find an interested buyer.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
