Question
star of david coin
star of david coin
My son has what you described to another as a morocco coin.  His coin is in very good shape if it is as you described. My son has been curious about the origins and value of his coin for quite some time so if you could take a look and help him out, I would appreciate it very much. An image of the date side of the coin is attached.  The other side is a star of david with a beveled edge.  The coin is bronze and weighs 9.4 grams. Thank you very much for your time.

Answer
Hi Lynette,
Judging by the weight it would be a 4 falus denomination, which is the largest for coins of this type. The weigh is actually a bit low, but such variation in size and weight is common for these crudely cast coins. The picture is a bit blurry, but I believe the date is 1288 (plus correct me if it's not). This is a Hijri date of the Islamic calendar and corresponds to the year 1871 by our Gregorian calendar.
In good condition it is worth around $10 to $15 if sold on eBay and up to double that in a retail situation.
PS: On these coins it's not referred to as the "Star of David". That would be offensive to the people who made and used the coins. They refer to it as the "Seal of Solomon".
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
