Two unknown medals
Two unknown medals
Hi,
I'm back, with tow more medals that I'm not have much information about those. The first one, I think is a german production, but all the legends are in spanish. Obverse; Cristobal Colon Bust with his name. Reverse; a woman crowned seated on the world with a ship on the distance. Legend, Recuerdo del 4to Centenario 1892. Bronze, 45mm, is like uncirculated condition. I like to know the origen country, value and to what country was made. Second one, I think is from germany becuase the person on the medal. Obverse, Simon Gfeller Bust with years. Reverse; a cabin on the forest. Legend, S. Gfellers Geburtshaus.Silver .900, 32mm, Uncirculated condition. Can you tell me the country, motive and value? Thanks

Answer
Hi Ramon,
The first one is the large variety, listed as Eglit 100. There is also a smaller 27mm version which is Eglit 224. The small one is worth $50 to $75 in this condition and your larger version is worth in the range of $200. It was made for Spain by a well known German medallist and sculptor, Ludwig Christoph Lauer from Nuremberg. This is the same Lauer that produced so many little play money coins.
The second one is a modern commemorative medal, showing the years that this comedian lived and his famous house is on the back. It's something that most people would view as being worth silver value or a little higher. Most likely the value would be higher to someone who collects items associated with this person than someone who collects medals.
Thanks!

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
