Coin and Paper Money Collecting/just wondering

Question
I was going through some pennies the other night and found a 1984 d penny that was missing the L in liberty and also was missing the In IN GOD WE TRUST? The T in TRUST was also very weak, as if it were not struck as hard as the other letters. I was wondering if you have ever heard or seen anything like this? The reverse side of the coin has nothing wrong with it, what do you think?

Answer
Chad,

Without seeing it, I can only guess that either the die used to strike the coin was extremely worn, or there was a foreign substance (like grease) that got into the die and prevented the full striking of the coin.

In either case, its value will be a dollar or less -- collectors just are very interested in errors like this.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
