QUESTION: I'm sorry about that Joe. its a dollar coin and yes you can see liberty.now its not very clear but you can see it as well as the strips on the shield. and the stars are very clean as well. i would say that its in very good condition

Answer
Hi Matt,

1846 was a common year for dollars; over 110,000 were minted.

If you have accurate measuring devices, a genuine coin is 38.1 mm in diameter and weighs 26.73 grams
Describing how to tell if it is genuine from looking at it, isn't so easy.  The surface of the coin tells a lot.  Look for porosity, uneven metal flow and blurry lettering.  These coins were sharply struck so detail should be good.
Look along the rim of the coin, not the edge.  Look for a seam where 2 halves may be glued together, or one half sits inside the rim of the other half.

Do not clean the coin in any way, you will lose value by doing so.

The other option is to send the coin off to a certification service that will authenticate it and grade it.  The 2 main companies at PCGS and NGC.  There is a fee for this but not big, maybe $30

Good Luck!
