Coin and Paper Money Collecting/What coin is this and how much is it worth?

Question
I found a gold coin in an old jar at my house. It is gold and very old. on the heads side it looks like an eagle flying in from the right side with an american flag in the background. On the other side it is a horseshoe with a ribbon (i not sure what to call it) in a way entangling it. The writing on the rim says may good luck always accompany the bearer. Can you tell me what it is? Any help would be nice. Thanks

Answer
Rahul,

It's not really a coin, but rather a good luck token.  Privately minted, most likely it is either brass or gold plated.  If you take it to one of those "We Buy Gold" places, you can find out how much gold is in it.  If it is gold, then the gold melt value will be what it's worth -- if it's just brass or gold plated, it will have a novelty value of a dollar or two.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
