Question
Hello Lazar,
I was at an auction today and spent 4$ for it. It has a big 5 in the middle and its from 1973. Its in great condition and its says Dinara, Dinarjev and two other words in a different language. On the other side it has a torch surrounded by and arch and says jugoslavia underneath. What do you think this coin is worth.

Thanks, Jacob

Answer
Hi Jacob,

Well i can still remember those coins when they where in circulation. As other Yugo coins inflation ate also this one after 1981. Dinara is in Croatian, Dinarjev is in Slovenian, Динара (Dinara) is in Serbian and Динари (Dinari) in Macedonian language.

Here is Krause catalog coin number:

KM# 58 5 DINARA
6.9000 g., Copper-Nickel-Zinc, 27.5 mm. Obv: State emblem
Rev: Text encircles denomination, wreath surrounds, six stars
above Edge: Milled Note: Regular issue.
Date Mintage F VF XF Unc BU
1971 10,224,000 0.20 0.40 0.60 1.00 —
Note: Two varieties of wreath
1972 27,974,000 0.10 0.20 0.35 0.60 —
Note: Two varieties of 2 in date
1973 12,705,000 0.20 0.40 0.60 1.00 —
1974 6,054,000 0.25 0.50 1.00 2.00 —
1975 13,533,000 0.10 0.20 0.35 0.60 —
1976 4,965,383 0.10 0.25 0.40 0.80 —
1977 922,000 0.30 0.60 1.20 2.50 —
1978 1,000,000 0.10 0.25 0.50 1.50 —
1979 3,000,000 0.10 0.25 0.40 0.80 —
1980 9,977,000 0.10 0.20 0.35 0.60 —
1981 15,450,000 0.10 0.20 0.35 0.60 —

As you can see that 5 Dinara 1973 is about 1 dollar $ in UNCirculated grade and very common as most of Yugoslavian coins.

Scarcer year is 1977 but most wanted from this series is similar 2 Dinara 1975!

Sorry but I really cannot say that purchase was good because i sold hundred of silver and other coins on Ebay below 4$ and i can only wish in my dreams that i can sell all those kilos of Dinars in my basement for such good price as seller on that auction you were.

But on other hand you bought only one piece and not a big lot, so there is no trouble or any loss.

Wish you better luck next time and you can get always some advice from me about purchase, value or coin identification.

Best regards from Slovenia
