Coin and Paper Money Collecting/parsons & co. gold bar

have a gold bar, one side stamped PARSONS&C>ASSAYERS COL> !*^) TWENTY DOLS, the other side CARAT 18 1/2 AND DWT 25 6/10. Is this a rare coin (bar), what is it worth? Thank You. John

Hi John,

John Parsons & Co. operated a mint in the town of Tarryall, Colorado (in Park County) in the summer of 1861.  Very little is known about his company.  His fame comes from the very rare Pikes Peak gold pieces he produced, which are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each.

As for your gold bar, if it is real, it will be worth thousands.  However, there are many many fantasy replica pieces out there that are worthless.  So you will need to get it authenticated and certified first-hand by an expert.  This is not something you can do online -- you need to go to a major coin show where there are top coin grading and authenticating companies (PCGS, NGC, and ANACS) attending.  The closest show to you in the near future is in New Orleans in May.  Details about that show can be found here :

I hope this helps,

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
