I have a coin from 1863. On one side it reads "The Flag Of Our Union".. On the other side of this coin it reads "Anybody attempts to tear it down, shoot him on the spot. In the center of this coin it has the letters DIX and on the other side it has the flag. Would you have any history on this coin and could you please tell me if this is worth anything and how much ? Thank You,

Hi Christine,

You have what is known as a Patriotic Civil War Token.

During the Civil War there was considerable hoarding of small denomination coins by people that feared the outcome of the war.  This caused widespread shortages of coinage in many cities & towns.  So some entrepeneuring die sinkers and engravers made tokens like this, and went around to different merchants and convinced them to buy these tokens and use them as pennies to make change.  The merchants of the town would agree to take each others' tokens as coinage, so it worked.  This was outlawed by Congress at the end of the war.

This flag/dix token you have is a more common variety, but it appears to be in decent shape.  I would estimate it to have a retail value of about $20

More information about Civil War Tokens can be found at the society's website here :

I hope this helps,

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
