Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1838 large penny

Not in great condition but has a W stamped (as if branded in)in the center of the front and on the reverse side.  Any idea what the significance of this would be?  Is there any way to clean the almost 200 years of build up on the coin safely and effectively?  Thanks so much for your time.

Hi Jayne,

The W was stamped into the coin after it left the mint, in essence, destroying any collector value.

As for cleaning it, you can't diminish the value anymore.  I would try soaking it in acetone (nail polish remover) to remove any surface dirt.  Then just use some copper cleaner.  Again, the value has been ruined so you won't be hurting it.
