Coin and Paper Money Collecting/US dollar bill hoax or error?

Question
I have a 1985 US dollar bill with one of the digits in the serial number missing on both lines. I can't find any eraser marks. The serial number reads A3356544 E, the number missing after the last 4. Can the number be removed in another way and do you suspect this is really someone's practical joke/boredom time as I do?

Answer
Hi Sherry,

Yes, people can remove letters and they are sometimes sold on eBay as errors but many of them aren't.  The only way to know for sure is to send the note in to a grading company and get them to pass judgement on it.  If it comes back as an error it's worth $100 to $200 depending on condition.
