1985 D/? Close Up on D
Good day Ron,

I've only been collecting US coins for about a year, but just recently started to notice errors.  I've attached a jpg of a 1985-D 1c that I noticed in change from a McDonalds purchase.  Glancing into my hand I noticed the "D" just wasn't quite right.

I started looking thru the Cherrypickers'Guide (Which was in my Christmas stocking), but became confused and had a hard time understanding what I was reading.

Would you please look at the attached jpg photos and give me your opinion?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Steve,

It looks to me like that extra image was caused by a contact hit, pushing the surface medal outward, away from the D.  Notice how the underlying zinc is exposed between the D and the second image?

This is definitely not the D/D repunched mintmark variety shown here :

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
