Coin and Paper Money Collecting/50 cent piece

Question
I have a 1984 50 cent piece that is the size of a quarter and twice as thick. Do you know if it is worth anything?

Answer
Hello Stacey,

I have not seen this type of defect and cannot give you a value without seeing it.
Is the image fully struck?
Is the rim complete and does it have a sharp edge?

A quarter blank can and has made it into the half dollar press in years past but there is a gate that should stop a coin blank if it is too thick.
A coin blank twice the thickness of a Half-Dollar should not have been able to get into the machine to be stamped. I can only suggest you have it looked at by a coin person.

If you want, write back with your general location (nearest large cities) and some telephone area codes and some local zip codes in your area, I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy.

Or there is help at most large coin shows. There are representatives from the grading services. ANACS service even some smaller shows. They give free consultations on coins at their table. If you need to find a show or an error coin authenticator in your area just write me again.

Please remember to rate this answer. And check the nomination box on the rating page below any comments you may have.

Thank You and Good Luck
