Question
I have the first 42 commemorative  coins put out by THE AMERICAN NEGRO COMMEMORATIVE SOCIETY, These coins are the size of a silver dollar and features
picures of famous negro such as Martin Luther king jr, They are struck in sterling silver proof, can you put a price on them, also these coins were minted around 1968. Is there still a AMERICAN NEGRO COMMEMORATIVE SOCIETY?

Answer
Hi Edward,

These are actually silver medals issued by Franklin Mint -- a private company -- so I seriously doubt there is any AMERICAN NEGRO COMMEMORATIVE SOCIETY in existance today.

There is almost no resale market for this kind of privately minted medals.  Their value will be based only on the silver they contain.  So weigh the coins in grams, take the total grams and divide by 31.1 to get troy ounces, then multiply that number by $11.00 to get a close estimate of what you could expect to get for them at today's silver prices.

You could try selling them on eBay, and you might get a little more there (than you would from a dealer), but you will also have to deal with the time, effort, and fees involved with selling on eBay.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
