Coin and Paper Money Collecting/D T proof mark on silver boullion

Question
In a collection of Morgan Head dollars, I've found a VG condition Liberty/Eagle silver 1oz coin with the mark D T on the eagle side along the tail feathers. 39.2mm dia/2.7mm thick. I'm assuming this is a private strike but I can't identify the source. Any help?

Answer
Allan,

The only U.S. Mint issue silver 1oz. coin is the silver eagle, pictured here :

Assuming yours is a private mint issue, the D T letters could mean anything, but I would assume they are the initials of the designer of the image on the eagle side of the coin.

There are hundreds of companies that have minted silver rounds over the years, so it may take a lifetime to find the origin.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
