Question
Why was Ike silver dollars not included in 1971 and 1972 mint and proof sets and what exactly is a "blue ike" dollar? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Don,

I really can't tell you why the Ikes were not in the 1971 and 72 mint sets, but This I can tell you.  In the years 1971, 72, 73 and 74 the US Mint produced Ike Dollars from 40% silver.  These were packaged in cellophane and blue envelopes and were uncirculated coins.  They also produced them in proof which were packaged in hard plastic slabs and in brown boxes.
That is how we got the terms blue and brown Ikes.
