QuestionI found a penny that has a star on the back of it and has written on the front Common Wealth of the Bahamas with a symbol cannot make out what the symbol is. It is dated for 2001. Can you tell me anything about this coin?
AnswerHello Timothy,
I am not an expert on foreign or ancient coins. If it is a foreign coin I use the "Standard Catalog of World Coins" for information. Every library has a copy in reference.
They are in volumes each covering a date range.
This sounds like a common one cent One Cent Coin. The Bahamas one cent circulation coin is round, measuring 19.05 mm in diameter with a smooth edge, bearing on the reverse the Coat-of-Arms of The Bahamas together with the words "Commonwealth of The Bahamas" which forms a crown around the Coat-of-Arms.
Below the Coat-of-Arms is the date. On the obverse is a Star Fish together with the words "One Cent".
Here is a picture link for the issue,

I cannot tell you a value but since the coin issue 6 years old and still circulating in commerce it would have to be a mint state specimen to sell for more than a dollar.
