Question
Hi Joe,

I have what appears to be a Barber pattern or test pattern dime.  It is dated 1891 (as you know, the year before the Barber dimes were issued)and it does not have a mint stamp on it.  I haven't seen this particular portrait/face on any of the other Barber dimes I looked at online, though it is clearly a Barber as opposed to a seated version.  Any idea if this dime is worth something?  What should I be calling it?  Pattern?  Proof?  Something else?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi SHeryl,
Without seeing the coin, it's tough to say what it is.  There was a pattern piece dated 1891 but it is the design that was ultimately used for the series.
