QuestionI found a coin and I have no idea where it is from or anything about it.on the front of the coin it reads carol IIII d.g or d.c. hisp.etind.r. 1792 and on the back it reads auspice.deo??in.utro.felix
Front of the coin has a spanish looking person and on the back and has a shield with 8 on the left side and a S on the right with a crown sitting on top of the shield.
AnswerHello Mary,
What you describe sounds like a coin of Charles IV of Spain. You did not mention if it is silver or gold. Here is a bit of information but you should check with Brad Swain at:
http://www.allexperts.com/user.cgi?m=4&expID=21130&catID=2297
or Check in your library for a copy of "Standard Catalog of World Coins"
The legend is in abbreviated Latin and says: "CHARLES IV BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING OF SPAIN AND THE INDIES" and "UNDER GOD'S WILL WE PROSPER".
Here are several important pieces of information that is important to further identify the coin.
-the denomination appears to the left of a crowned shield as a number 1,2,4 or 8 with the letter" S" to the right of the shield.
-The assayer, that appears as two initials at seven-o'clock position on the reverse
-The Mint Mark which appears to the right of the assayer's initials and is either a letter or monogram.
