Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Kennedy Half Dollar

Question
Hello,
I am trying to find out information on a Kennedy Half Dollar coin I found. It's pretty much new condition but its 1988 gold colored. It's mint mark says "P" and it has the years 1960 and 1985 stamped on the side with Kennedy's head. There is what looks like an "R" on his collar as well.

Thanks for your help,
           Robert

Answer
Hi Robert,

Somebody took a normal half dollar, stamped the two dates on it, and gold plated it.  It was done as a 25th anniversary, but I don't know what the anniversary was for.

This is considered a novelty item, worth maybe a dollar or two to an interested buyer.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
