Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Mint error penny

Question
I have a mint error penny I found in circulation a few years ago. I've looked in
reference books, but I've not been able to identify the type of error or the coin's
worth. I was hoping you could help me out. Links to scans of the coin are enclosed.

Answer
Hi Major,

From what I can see, your coin has a "cud" error, and a quite large one at that.  What has happened is that a large piece of the die broke off, so this coin got struck with part of the die missing, so the big blob on the right side is from the flowing metal that went up into the missing part of the die.

I would estimate value at $20 to $50, depending on how many interested buyers you can find.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
