Coin and Paper Money Collecting/New coins?

Question
I called in to NY Daily News ad for a new golg colored dollar coin. They were being sold in 50 coin sets for about $80 mint.
They also included a single separat coin to show off to friends so as not to ruin the mint. They came in gold bar like cases. My problem is that I dont have a contact number and cant reach the distributor to see why they havent delivered yet. (Two weeks) Additional do you know about these coins...are they scams or are they of any value.

Answer
Hi Emjay,

I assume you are referring to the new Presidential Dollars.

Sorry to say it, but it sounds like you paid $30 for a fancy package for 50 coins you could get at almost any bank.  That is assuming they deliver anything at all.

If you call your local bank, I bet you could get the same coins there for face value of $1 apiece.

They are making hundreds of millions of these coins for each President, so they are not likely to ever be considered rare or valuable -- just an interesting commemorative coin set.

So if they contact you to buy a set of coins for the next President, I suggest you save your money.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
