Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Omaha Bank Hoard Roosevelt Dimes
Expert: PAPAJACK - 11/1/2007
QuestionI'm collecting a set of silver Roosevelt dimes from the Omaha Bank Hoard. In your opinion, will these dimes be worth more than regular certified dimes in the future? Also, is it even possible to get a whole set of them? I've noticed a lot of repeat years for sale, and very few later silver dimes, from the late 50's through 1964. Thanks!
AnswerHello Fred,
Sometimes at auctions the origin or provenance of the coins comes into play. Some will pay higher prices for coins coming from famous collections.
I cannot say that these Omaha Silver Coins will be worth more in any particular grade than any other graded by the same company. It is just a marketing tool to indicate that the coins are original condition allegedly never circulated.
Collectors will decide what price to pay on a coin by coin basis. A 1949-S in grade MS65 from the Omaha collection will never sell for more then one from a famous collection like the Lee or Eliasberg collections did.
In fact may only sell slightly more than any grade 65 coin graded by the same company.
For the second part of your question I am not that familiar with what was found in this "hoard" but most likely there will not be a full set available from it.
Coins are issued to banks as ordered from the Federal Reserve. They do not choose a particular date or mint but get what can be supplied at the time. Then having the local banks put them aside and not issue them all is just lucky circumstance.
