Question
Hi Dan,  I have been searching for more information about a coin collection that I bought into a few years ago and found this site/email with a similiar question and wondered if you can elaborate further on these coins.  I have a collection along with coin holder with all presidents and the deal was that I would receive each month 4 $5 president coins along with a certificate of authenticity.  These coins were from Republic of Liberia and as I noted they are $5 coins with the dates each president was in office.  The problem is that I became ill and didnt respond back to one of the last offers and am missing 41st - Bush Sr. and 42nd Clinton.  I did receive Bush Jr. but only with the year he got into office 2000.  I think you stated that these coins are not worth anything and that the company is no longer in business, can you confirm?  The certificate states these coins are worth the face value $5...I would like to get the last 2 coins to complete the set for I have invested a good deal of money so far..cant locate my records to confirm what I paid each time for the 4 coins but think it was $30-40 I think.  Anything you can share would be great..hopefully its not bad news!  Thanks Kathy!

Answer
Hi Kathy,

Sorry but I don't have any good news for you.

These coins are privately minted with the authority of the Republic of Liberia.  They say they have a $5 face value, but that's only in Liberia, and I doubt you could even spend them there.

They contain no precious metal, so there is no value there either.

If you still want to fill that hole in your set, about the only chance you have is to patiently wait for them to appear on eBay, though I doubt you will be able to buy just the two you are missing -- you'll probably have to buy other presidents along with the ones you need.

I wish I had better news for you.

Dan

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
