Question
I have a Parsons & C Assayers Col 1860 twenty dollar gold piece with back saying carat 18 1/2 and dwt of 25 6/10 I was wondering what this bar might be worth and where I could go to have it checked out.

Answer
Hi Dustin,

There is only one genuine specimin known and there were many base-metal forgeries of this ingot made in the 1960's.

The genuine item should weigh 39.53 grams -- check that first.  If the weight's light, then you have a fake.

Being a unique item, it's impossible to give a value -- only a major auction sale would reveal how many thousands it is worth -- IF IT IS GENUINE.

If it passes the weight test, then check out the PCGS website -- www.pcgs.com -- and see if they will be at a coin show in your area, where you can take the ingot and submit it for certification.

Good luck,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
