Question
Hi Jim
I've got this coin  a 1883 hawaii coin and was wondering if it was worth any thing .
I discripe it for you on the front: Kalakaua 1 King Of Hawaii.
on the back: Lamau Keeaoraaina 1ka pono Hapaha
1/4 D.
many thanks Doddy Sara.

Answer
Hello, I think but am not sure that this is a Hawaiian coin -- there were such things and my limited knowledge is that they were in the late 1800s.  Try two things (1) go to www.ebay.com and do a search for Hawaii quarter.  I just did that and got some matches and saw what
I think is your item.  Compare carefully.  Look at condition as that has a lot to do with value (just a little better condition can be a lot better price).  Also, your piece might be a copy or counterfeit -- you would need an expert to look at it to be sure.  (2) go to www.google.com and do the same search.  You should find some hits on people also selling this item.

Whatever you do, do not under ANY circumstances try to improve the condition of your coin.  You can only do serious damage.  If you clean or otherwise try to improve your coin, those knowledgeable in the coin business will be able to tell and it will result in lower value for your piece.

Hope this helps, Jim Lawniczak
