Coin and Paper Money Collecting/mnt proofs

Question
I have an important question.  My daughter broke into our coin collection and opened the mint proof silver sets for 2002, 2004 and two for 2006.  She also opened the Denverset of my 2002 uncirculated coins.  How should we handle them.  How will they be graded now? Needless to say, we are a bit stressed.

Answer
Hi Sarah,
The first thing I would do is get some everyday coins for your daughter, as "her" collection. :)

I can't tell you how they will be graded, that would depend on if the coins have scratches.  Those sets are not terribly expensive so replacement is possible, if necessary.  You must have one strong girl to be able to open the proof sets, normally it takes a hammer!  The hard plastic cases do a great job of protecting the coins.
As for the mint set, write it off and get another.  You may be able to locate just the Denver portion on eBay, but you will probably pay 75% of the price of a whole set.
It's unfortunate that this happened, but it happens in every family!  I hear this often.  Don't fret.
